Buffalo River After Late Spring Success

Thu 12th November 2020

Michael Moroney had loftier targets in mind for Buffalo River this spring, but he’s now aiming the galloper at Saturday’s Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m).

He sped out to lead the Toorak Handicap (1600m) and was just gunned down by Mr Quickie to finish second, and would have headed to the Cox Plate (2040m) had he held on to win.

“He’s been a little bit disappointing he didn’t win one of those races (the Toorak or Cantala) so we decided we would keep going now he is up and fit,” Moroney told racing.com.

“There’s this race and we still might have a go at 2000m … there’s a Ballarat Cup or something like that, we’ll see.”

Buffalo River then finished 15 of 16 when going too hard too early in the Kennedy Cantala Stakes, but he has drawn more kindly this time around in the Sandown Stakes and is well found in the market as a big winning chance.
