2022 Northerly Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The final Group 1 of the Ascot Racing Carnival gets underway on Saturday, with the running of the $1.5m Northerly Stakes, formerly known as the Kingston Town Classic. Held over 1800m at Ascot Racecourse, the weight-for-age feature has some real standout names on the honour roll including; Kingston Town (1982), Vo Rogue (1988) and Better Loosen Up (1989), and has been a happy hunting ground for prolific WA owner, Bob Peters, in recent times.

Looking at the market, Dabble has Godolphin stalwart, Cascadian, favourite at $2.80 off the back of some solid interstate form. Star three-year-old, Amelia’s Jewel, is right on his heels at $3.20 following her dominant WA Guineas win, and runner-up in that race, Bustler, is next best at $10.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen, especially in capacity fields like this. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Northerly Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Cascadian (12) – $2.80F
Jockey – James McDonald 59kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Rising nine year old who is racing in career best form. Strung two wins together before a fast finishing fifth in the Champions Mile last start behind Alligator Blood. He beat home some handy horses on that occasion, including Private Eye, and has since won a trial here in Perth in preparation for this. Rating is far superior to his opposition here and looks thrown in under weight-for-age conditions. The one to beat.

2. Dom To Shoot (7) – $71
Jockey – Paul Harvey 59kg
Trainer – Sean & Jake Casey

Got the job done last Saturday in BM78+ grade with champion hoop D Oliver in the saddle. Form prior was solid but will find this a lot tougher. Finished third in this race in 2020, suggesting the 1800m is no issue, but it’s hard to see him making it two wins in a row here.

3. Bad Wolf (2) – $126
Jockey – Shaun McGruddy 59kg
Trainer – Ashley Maley

Chased hard behind Buster Bash at this track/distance, before a midfield effort last start over 1400m. Will appreciate the step up in trip again here and tries hard in his races, but has to go to a whole other level if he’s to be competitive against this field.

4. Startrade (8) – $41
Jockey – Chris Nicoll 59kg
Trainer – Daniel Morton

Ultra-consistent galloper who got home well last start in the Railway at big odds. Untried past a mile but off the strength of his last run, the 1800m looks suitable. Has to lug an extra 6kg to find out and meets a seemingly stronger field here. Definitely not the worst but have others ahead of him.

5. Kaptain Kaos (13) – $101
Jockey – Lucy Warwick 59kg
Trainer – Michael Grantham

Got back and held his ground last start in the Railway Stakes. Form prior was nothing to get excited about. Steps up to 1800m for the first time and has an awkward gate to overcome. Others make more appeal.

6. God Has Chosen (10) – $34
Jockey – Shaun O’Donnell 59kg
Trainer – Donna Riordan

Raced wide and whacked away ok last start in the Railway. Placed over 2000m in the past and is racing like the added distance will suit, but needs to improve on what we’ve seen this prep if he’s to win this under weight-for-age conditions.

7. Ironclad (11) – $41
Jockey – Brad Rawiller 59kg
Trainer – Will Clarken

Ran well at Flemington and Cranbourne before a flop in the Railway last start here at Ascot. Should improve after that hitout here and the 1800m is no issue but it’s hard to be confident off what we saw last start. Has the ability to win a race like this but take on trust.

8. Last Of The Line (3)
Jockey – Brad Parnham 59kg
Trainer – Stephen Miller

SCRATCHED

9. Notorious One (15) – $101
Jockey – Laqdar Ramoly (a) 59kg
Trainer – Chris & Michael Gangemi

Stalked the speed and was no match last start in the Railway Stakes. Form prior this prep has been poor for a race like this. Yet to place in three runs at 1800m and has come up with an outside gate which looks to seal his fate here.

10. Trix Of The Trade (16) – $13
Jockey – Troy Turner 58.5kg
Trainer – Colin Webster

Made the most of a soft run in transit last start when taking out the Railway Stakes here at Ascot. Not sure he will get the same run this time from the outside gate, but has only missed a place once in his fourteen start career and has to be considered one of the better chances, providing some luck goes his way.

11. Alaskan God (6) – $13
Jockey – Chris Parnham 58.5kg
Trainer – Daniel Morton

Ran on well from the back of the field first up in the Asian Beau before a disappointing effort in the Railway last start, despite racing wide. Steps up to 1800m now which is a big tick and he should enjoy a much more economical run from the good gate. Will need to be on his A game to beat the fancied runners but is loaded with ability and can hit back hard here.

12. Steinem (4) – $14
Jockey – John Allen 57kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Talented Victorian mare who ran a big race last start in the Matriarch Stakes at Flemington. Has since trialled here in WA and gets the services of Irishman, John Allen, who sticks with her. Should get every opportunity from the good draw and is good enough to finish in the money. Each-way hope.

13. Searchin’ Roc’s (14) – $61
Jockey – Kyra Yuill 56.5kg
Trainer – Jim Taylor

No luck first up before a solid win in the R J Peters. Didn’t have a lot of room last start in the Railway but was only fair to the line. Needs to overcome a tricky gate here and produce a career best to win this. Not hopeless but others look stronger.

14. Treasured Star (5) – $11
Jockey – William Pike 56.5kg
Trainer – Adam Durrant

Got back and weaved through the pack late to finish a closing sixth in the Railway last start. Good win prior in the Asian Beau. Steps up to 1800m for the first time which looks ideal and she should enjoy a nice run from the barrier. William Pike will be itching to get back in the feature winners’ stall here in WA and gets a good opportunity on this mare.

15. Bustler (9) – $10
Jockey – Steven Parnham 52kg
Trainer – Neville Parnham

Won his first four starts in good style before a close second to Amelia’s Jewel in the WA Guineas last start. Goes up another 200m here which will be a test in itself and meets a quality field of gallopers. Has plenty of ability and is a real up and coming talent but has to turn the tables on the filly that beat him last start and the likes of Cascadian and co. Place chance.

16. Amelia’s Jewel (1) – $3.20
Jockey – Patrick Carbery 50kg
Trainer – Simon Miller

Went down at Listed level two starts ago as a very short priced favourite before hitting back hard in the WA Guineas last start. Won’t spend a dime from the inside gate here but will need the gaps to appear at the right time. If she gets even luck, she’s more than capable of making it win number six and taking home her first G1 trophy. Respect.

Final Word

A quality line up of fifteen will greet the starter in this year’s Northerly Stakes, with the early scratching of Last Of The Line. The majority of the field ran in the Railway Stakes two weeks ago, with the exception of a handful of runners, including the two well backed favourites.

Found it very hard to tip against Cascadian in this. He’s rated 117, 11 points higher than any other runner in the field and is thrown in under the weight-for-age conditions. His recent form is very good and the Godolphin stable have been unstoppable in recent times. He does have to handle the Ascot circuit and will need some cover from the wider gate, but clearly looks the one to beat.

Amelia’s Jewel is an exciting prospect and will be hard to beat providing she gets some clear running from the inside gate. Her win in the WA Guineas last start was dominant and she’s looking to follow in the footsteps of Arcadia Queen, who completed the Guineas/Northerly double in 2018.

Alaskan God looks the best value in the race for mine. He was disappointing in the Railway last start, despite covering ground, but his first up run was very good and he should appreciate the rise in trip to 1800m now. He’s drawn a softer gate here and should be ready to peak third up.

Victorian mare, Steinem, brings some solid form lines and is capable of running a big race, as is local mare, Treasured Star, who found the line well without a lot of room in the Railway. No knock against Trix Of The Trade, but the outside gate makes it hard and Bustler needs to lift if he’s to turn the tables on Amelia’s Jewel and beat Cascadian.

2021 Kingston Town Classic Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The TABtouch Masters concludes this Saturday with the running of the 2021 Kingston Town Classic. This is the third straight Saturday with a Group One held at Ascot Racecourse, with 10 horses lining up for the $1M prizemoney and also the last Australian Group One for 2021. Six of the 10 horses come out of the Railway Stakes, two weeks ago, which was won by Western Empire.

Speaking of Western Empire, Dabble has priced him as if he is unbeatable yet again. After winning the Railway as a $1.60 favourite, Western Empire is priced at $1.40 for this Saturday’s main event. His stable mate and 2020 All Star Mile winner, Regal Power, is on the next line of betting at $5.50 while Searchin’ Roc’s is the only other runner in single-figure odds, with the three-year-old filly priced at $10.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and as good as Western Empire was two weeks ago, we see upsets all the time. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you! Read on below to find out runner by runner preview of the 2021 Kingston Town Classic along with The Shark’s Kingston Town Classic best tips.

1. Regal Power (8) – $5.50
Jockey – Patrick Carbery
Trainer – Grant & Alana Williams

Since winning the All Star Mile, it has been quite a rocky 18 months for Regal Power. A lung infection saw him put in two ordinary performances in the 2020 Spring Carnival before being brought back to WA and he has only had three races since then. Back to back 4ths to start this preparation had many thinking that he could be returning to his best, but he would need extraordinary luck to factor here. He has never placed from two 3rd up runs and he finished behind the same three horses in his two runs this prep and the closest any of those three got to Western Empire in the Railway was 7.25 lengths.

2. Trap For Fools (7) – $61
Jockey – Brad Rawiller
Trainer – Lindsey Smith

Trap For Fools finished almost 3L off Notorious One (who finished 2nd) first up, who then was 2L off Western Empire in the Asian Beau Stakes before finishing 6.37L behind him in the Railway. That form doesn’t really stack up for the eight-year-old gelding, who hasn’t raced since mid-September and hasn’t won from nine tries when 1st up.

3. Neufbosc (1) – $51
Jockey – Jason Brown
Trainer – Neville Parnham

Neufbosc was also in that race with Trap For Fools, behind Notorious One and Tellem We’re Coming, but he finished much further back in that one and has also had four runs since then, finishing no better than 5th. He has also failed to fire in his one attempt at 1800m and can’t be considered, despite the small field size.

4. Too Close The Sun (10) – $34
Jockey – Joseph Azzopardi
Trainer – Lindsey Smith

The first of the runners from the Railway Stakes. Too Close The Sun finished 5th, 6.75L off the pace two weeks ago, but does meet the winner 2kg better at the weights this Saturday. He also has a win and a third from three runs at the distance and should be at peak fitness 3rd up from a freshen, where he has finished in the top three in four of five runs.

5. Platoon (5) – $101
Jockey – Steve Parnham
Trainer – Neville Parnham

Platoon has met Western Empire twice this prep and not gotten within 4.5L of the favourite. He has won at the distance previously, but he has contested this race the last two years with his best effort being 4.9L off the pace. It is hard to see him doing better than that this year.

6. Notorious One (6) – $21
Jockey – Clint Johnston-Porter
Trainer – Chris & Michael Gangemi

Notorious One is a tough one to judge out of the Railway. He did manage to finish fourth, but was 0.75L away from third, who he meets 2.5kg worse at the weights on Saturday, and was 6.37L off Western Empire, who he meets at equal weights. He is 3rd up from a freshen now, meaning he should be at his peak fitness, but he hasn’t placed in two 3rd up runs, hasn’t placed in two runs at the distance and has over 6L to make up here.

7. Western Empire (9) – $1.40
Jockey – William Pike
Trainer – Grant & Alana Williams

Is it simply a case of how much does he win by? Western Empire has been nothing short of breathtaking, winning six straight races by a combined margin of 15.9 lengths. His seven career wins have all come in his last eight races, with his one slip up actually seeing him finish behind Kissonallforcheeks, who meets 2kg worse off from that run and 2kg worse off from the Railway. Clearly a lot has changed since that meeting earlier this year in February, and the Grant & Alana Williams gelding has established himself as the best horse in WA at the moment.

8. Dance Music (2) – $41
Jockey – Brad Parnham
Trainer – Simon Miller

We really liked Dance Music to be one of the leading chances at finishing second to Western Empire in the Railway and while she didn’t disgrace us, she was 7.25L off the winner and 3.3L off second. However, she carried 3kg more than the winner in that race and is now 1.5kg lighter, with a massive 4.5kg weight swing making a massive difference. She also has two wins, a second and a third from four 4th up runs and is a perfect 1/1 at the distance. Admittedly, the four horses that beat her in the Railway that she meets again this Saturday all did run past her, indicating the extra distance may be no good against this lot, but you could do a lot worse than $5.50 the place.

9. Kissonallforcheeks (4) – $15
Jockey – Chris Parnham
Trainer – Daniel Morton

Kissonallforcheeks was one of those to run past Dance Music in the Railway, finishing 5.6L back in 3rd. We are now getting better odds for her here than we did two weeks ago, which is exceptional considering she has won 50% of her races and placed in 13/16. The query is that this is her sixth run this prep and she is untried over this distance, with 1600m being the furthest she has run in her career. She does meet the winner 2kg better at the weights this Saturday, but it is hard to factor her again.

10. Searchin’ Roc’s (3) – $10
Jockey – Kyra Yuill
Trainer – David Harrison

Last but not least, the X-factor runner of the race, Searchin’ Roc’s. While this three-year-old filly has just seven career starts next to her name, she also has five wins. Add in the fact that she is carrying just 50kg for this race, 6.5kg lighter than the next lightest and 8.5kg lighter than the favourite, it isn’t hard to see why there is a bit of hype surrounding Searchin’ Roc’s heading into Saturday. We saw Comfort Me bring weak but winning form into the Railway and run 2nd, so can Searchin’ Roc’s be the big improver in this race with conditions to suit?

Final Word

Clearly Western Empire should win this race. His win in the Railway was incredible and this looks like the natural progression for him to come out and romp his opposition yet again. However, there is no pride in backing a $1.40 pop to win a race, especially when it is our last crack at it for the calendar year.

Three-year-olds have had the most success in the Kingston Town Classic over more recent history, winning four of the last 10, three of the last six and two of the last three. The only three-year-old in this year’s race is Searchin’ Roc’s, who has won five of her seven career starts and would be the fourth three-year-old filly to win the race in the last seven years, if she was victorious.

Dance Music is another that we are happy to give a big wrap to. She has finished in the top three in all four 4th up runs and is 1/1 at the distance. While she would be the first six-year-old mare to win the race since the turn of the century, she doesn’t need to win with place odds of $5.50.

If you have an active account with either Neds or Sportsbet, a smart play might be a Same Race Multi. Have Western Empire to win, Searchin’ Roc’s to finish top 4 and Dance Music to finish top 4. That gives you a bit more security than backing either Searchin’ Roc’s or Dance Music to place, and can get some nice boosted odds that way. Odds for Same Race Multi markets don’t come out until Saturday morning at 9:30am, but you should get a handy price with Dance Music in there.

For our Dabble users, we are going with Dance Music to place. She hasn’t missed a place when 4th up from a spell and is 1/1 over 1800m. She does need to improve greatly from her run in the Railway, but we are hoping that she is saving the best for last in this one.

2020 Kingston Town Classic Runner By Runner Preview & Tips

The final Group 1 of the season sees cult hero William Pike on the short-priced favourite, will he be weaving his magic out west, or will something spoil the party?

Let’s take a look at each and every runner in the Group 1 2020 Kingston Town Classic to fill up our pockets…

1 – Gailo Chop – $51

Was in reasonable form in Melbourne earlier in the preparation but had a shocker first up out west in the Railway Stakes where he was caught wide the trip and dropped out around the turn. Has a better gate and setup here but this looks too tough at this stage for the ten-year-old.

2 – Trap For Fools – $91 💰

Loves it out west and has had two trials to keep him ticking over in preparation for this one. Will roll forward and make it a test from a long way out, and you could do worse than having a few dollars on him each way at the enormous price.

3 – Taxagano – $126

Hasn’t looked up to it this preparation, and with 50 starts under his belt, it’s tough to see where the improvement will come from.

4 – Too Close To The Sun – $9 👀🏆💰

Very brave in the Railway Stakes, just getting run down by Inspirational Girl. The extra 200m will suit and he has to be a live chance, and is easy to have on your side at near double figures.

5 – Missile Launch – $301

The odds tell the tale, would have to start running now.

6 – Neufbosc – $31 💰

Taken an age to break his maiden in Australia but looked promising when winning the Carbine Club Of Australia Stakes last outing. Can be thrown in exotics.

7 – Platoon – $35

Has been reasonable this preparation but looks to be running into a few smart ones here.

8 – Cup Night – $31

Ran well in the Railway to finish midfield but the step up in distance is unknown, hard to see him winning this.

9 – Arctic Stream – $126

Would need to grow another leg to be in this.

10 – Uni Time – $27

Ran well to place in the Railway but would need to step up again here, with 6kg added to him this time around. Price is about right.

11 – Truly Great – $21

Another one that rises 6kg here from the Railway, and probably the weakest of the G&A Williams runners. Happy to be against him.

12 – Inspirational Girl – $2.60 👀🏆💰

The best horse in the race and possibly the best horse in Western Australia at the moment. Won the Railway well but will have to go right back from barrier 18. It’s a question of what price you want to take, it looks a little short here for mine with the wide draw and poor record of Railway Stakes horses performing in the Kingston Town Classic.

13 – Kay Cee – $11 💰

Last year’s winner of this race isn’t quite in the same touch as 2019, but could challenge with a return to her best.

14 – Gemma’s Son – $34 💰

Had an unlucky run in the WA Guineas and can go in exotics at the big price.

15 – Dom To Shoot – $7.50 👀🏆💰

Three-year-olds have a great record in this race and this galloper looks one of the better chances, running home strongly in the WA Guineas behind Watch Me Dance in a race where leaders dominated.

16 – Watch Me Dance – $10 💰

Had the perfect run in the WA Guineas and must be respected, can go in all exotics.

17e – Snickerdoodledandy – $41

May have peaked a few back when winning at Stakes level, price looks about right.

18e – Naughty By Nature – Scratched

19e – Western Empire – $12 👀🏆💰

Looks unlikely to get a run but is in this up to his eyeballs if he gains a start. Flashed home late in the WA Guineas similar to Dom To Shoot, and will probably start a similar price if he somehow got into the field.
