2022 Kingsford-Smith Cup Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The Kingsford-Smith Cup, registered as the BTC Cup, is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held at Eagle Farm over 1300m. The $700,000 feature is used primarily as a lead up race to the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, and has been won by some exceptional sprinters, including the great Black Caviar. Last year’s race was taken out by Vega One, who finished with a wet sail from the back of the field.

As we look at the market for this year’s race, Dabble currently has Kiwi raider, Entriviere, favourite at $4.40 just ahead of Godolphin 3YO, Paulele, at $4.60. These two are the only runners under double figures, suggesting there is plenty of value to be found for multiple players.

However, we know anything can happen in this great game and you could make a winning case for the majority of this field. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and given our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Kingsford-Smith Cup along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Private Eye (16) – $17
Jockey – Brenton Avdulla 59kg
Trainer – Joseph Pride

Tailed off and pulled up lame last start in the G1 Doncaster Handicap. Has been back to the trials since and looked ok. Has a G1 Epsom Handicap win next to his name, and is a winner here at Eagle Farm. His best form is good enough but he needs to find more on recent efforts.

2. Laws Of Indices (21) – $23
Jockey – Rachel King 59kg
Trainer – Annabel Neasham

Finished midfield in the G1 Doncaster, before a solid effort in the G1 All Aged Stakes last time out. Form has been consistent without winning since arriving in Australia, but has drawn the car park here and will need some luck in the run.

3. Ellsberg (12) – $14
Jockey – Nash Rawiller 59kg
Trainer – Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou

Led them up and held on well in the G1 Doncaster, and did much the same last start in the G1 All Aged Stakes. Finished 2nd to Ayrton here last year suggesting the Eagle Farm surface is no issue. Will make his own luck on speed and take a fair bit of running down.

4. Eleven Eleven (4) – $13
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 59kg
Trainer – Gregory Hickman

Ran on well last start at Scone under the big weight, after winning his second Listed Magic Millions Cup the start prior. Has had the benefit of two runs here at Eagle Farm, where he was placed on both occasions. Usually puts his best foot forward in the sunshine state and has to be respected on recent form.

5. Apache Chase (6) – $13
Jockey – Jim Byrne 59kg
Trainer – Desleigh Forster

Local galloper who was brave in defeat first up in The Archer (Listed) at Rockhampton. Goes good second up and has a brilliant record here on his home track. Will enjoy a nice run from the good draw and should be right in the finish.

6. Wild Planet (19) – $71
Jockey – William Pike 59kg
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes

Got to the line well first up in the G2 Victory Stakes. Has since been back to the trials where he looked sharp. Finished 2nd in last year’s G1 Doomben 10,000. Will finish off hard and could represent some good value for multiples.

7. Rothfire (14) – $17
Jockey – James Orman 59kg
Trainer – Robert Heathcote

Resumed from a spell in the G2 Victory Stakes where he failed to run a drum despite being odds on. Gave a sight last start in the G1 Doomben 10,000 before knocking up late. Has a good record here at Eagle Farm, but will need some luck in the run from the draw.

8. Olmedo (3) – $41
Jockey – Brodie Loy 59kg
Trainer – Annabel Neasham

Finished midfield in the G3 Hawkesbury Cup, before a close up 2nd last start in the Listed Luskin Star at Scone. Doesn’t win out of turn, and will find this no easier than recent outings.

9. Signore Fox (11) – $26
Jockey – Ben Thompson 59kg
Trainer – Peter & Paul Snowden

Ran home well last start in the G1 Doomben 10,000 at big odds. Finished 3rd in this race last year before finishing 3rd in the G1 Stradbroke Handicap behind Tofane. Drawn to get a nice trail here and will be finishing off hard. Looks over the odds yet again.

10. Sierra Sue (20) – SCRATCHED
Jockey – Daniel Moor 57kg
Trainer – Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young

*This horse has since been scratched.*

Failed to handle the conditions last start in the G1 All Aged Stakes, after finishing midfield in the All Star Mile. Was a G1 winner prior to that at Caulfield. Wasn’t far away in the mares races here last year but will need some luck from the wide gate in this.

11. September Run (7) – $15
Jockey – Craig Williams 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Got the job done in the G1 William Reid Stakes before another handy effort last start in the G1 Robert Sangster at Morphettville. Is yet to race past 1200m but that shouldn’t be an issue here. Racing in good form and the barrier draw suits.

12. Entriviere (17) – $4.40F
Jockey – Opie Bosson 57kg
Trainer – Mark Walker

Finished 2nd to Levante in the G1 BCD Group Sprint at Te Rapa, before a colossal effort last start in the G1 Doomben 10,000. Drawn wide here again but the step up to 1300m looks a bonus, and her formlines are second to none.

13. Paulele (8) – $4.60
Jockey – James McDonald 57kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Enjoyed a nice run and went down fighting last start in the G1 Doomben 10,000. Finished 3rd to Nature Strip three runs back, and McDonald sticks here. Drawn well and hard to knock.

14. Isotope (13) – $12
Jockey – Ryan Maloney 57kg
Trainer – Tony Gollan

Failed to handle the wet track in the G1 Galaxy before running on ok last start in the G1 Doomben 10,000. Her better form is on the dry and the track rating will play a big part in her chances. If she gets conditions to suit she will be competitive.

15. Away Game (18) – $18
Jockey – John Allen 57kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Sold at the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale this week for $4m. Chased hard to the line last start in the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville. Has a good record here at Eagle Farm and rarely runs a bad race, but will need a bit of luck from the awkward alley.

16. Brooklyn Hustle (5) – $17
Jockey – Jamie Kah 57kg
Trainer – Jason Warren & Dean Krongold

Ran on well against the pattern at Sale behind In The Boat before finishing off well again in the G1 Robert Sangster. Quickly becoming a punter’s worst enemy, but should get conditions to suit here. Has won at Eagle Farm and with a bit of luck can land a bit closer from the soft draw.

17e. Scallopini (9) – $34
Jockey – Boris Thornton 59kg
Trainer – Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted

Looked home first up in the G2 Victory Stakes before being pipped on the post by Count De Rupee. Has a good record here at his home track and off the strength of his last run will be right in the mix.

18e. Niccanova (10) – $101
Jockey – Anthony Allen 59kg
Trainer – Steve Tregea

Wasn’t bad first up in the G2 Victory Stakes after covering ground early, before finishing well back in The Archer (Listed) last start. No stranger to these G1 Brisbane Winter Carnival features but needs to find more on recent efforts.

19e. Jamaea (15) – $21
Jockey – Tommy Berry 55kg
Trainer – Robert & Luke Price

Got back and ran on well last start in the G2 Victory Stakes here at Eagle Farm. Unlikely to get a run here but is capable of collecting a cheque if he does.

20e. Ranch Hand (1) – $26
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Got back and only warmed up late in the G2 Victory Stakes before stepping up to 1400m last start and getting the chocolates in a 3YO plate race. Talented colt on his day who can measure up if he finds himself in the field here.

21e. Alpine Edge (2) – $51
Jockey – Robbie Fradd 57kg
Trainer – Toby & Trent Edmonds

Ran on well last start in the Doomben 10,000 after a disappointing first up run. Loves Eagle Farm and the 1300m suits but he’ll more likely be going around in the G3 Fred Best Classic.

Final Word

This year’s Kingsford-Smith Cup looks a cracking race and should give us a good guide heading towards the G1 Stradbroke Handicap in a fortnight’s time. The forecast looks good in comparison to recent weeks and with a bit of luck the track should race well.

Going with the Kiwi mare Entriviere on top here. Her run last start in the Doomben 10,000 was super where she closed off hard to finish 3rd behind the in-form Mazu. The extra 100m suits and with a bit of luck from the gate looks very hard to beat.

From the same race, Paulele looks the main danger. He beat her home on the occasion and gets conditions to suit again here. J Mac sticks, he’s drawn well, and the firmer deck should only enhance his chances.

Ellsberg will roll forward and make his own luck on speed. He’s coming out of some strong G1 races down south and will take plenty of running down, as will local hope Apache Chase who was good first up in The Archer.

Of the others, Signore Fox has to be respected after his run in the 10,000 last start and races well here at Eagle Farm, and Brooklyn Hustle is more than capable of winning if the speed is clapped on, likewise Eleven Eleven.
