2022 J J Atkins Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The J J Atkins is a 1600m Group 1 race held for 2YO’s at Eagle Farm racecourse. Run on Stradbroke Handicap day, the $1m feature is a race steeped in history and has been taken out by some real top notch 2YO’s, since its first running in 1893. Converge, trained by the Waterhouse/Bott team, was victorious in last year’s race.

Dabble currently has Kiwi raider, Sharp ‘N’ Smart, favourite at $4.00 for this year’s J J Atkins. Sires Produce winner, Sheeza Belter, is the next best at $4.80, while last start winner and well bred youngster, Political Debate, is close behind at $5.00.

These three look the main winning hopes, however, we know anything can happen in this great game we call horse racing, especially with lightly raced 2YO’s. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 J J Atkins along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Brereton (15) – $12
Jockey – Jamie Kah 57kg
Trainer – Peter G Moody

Had his first go past 1000m last start in the Sires Produce, and made good ground to finish 3rd. The step up to a mile looks suitable after that effort and he should be right in the mix providing he gets some luck from the gate.

2. Twin Stars (6) – $16
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy 57kg
Trainer – Tony & Calvin McEvoy

Won the Sires Produce at Morphettville in good style before finishing off ok in Queensland’s version of the same race. Drawn well, gets the blinkers on for the first time and looks an each way chance.

3. Cocobrew Express (14) – $126
Jockey – Luke Tarrant 57kg
Trainer – Tom Button

Never got on the track last start and the run told in the straight. Drawn wide again and looks outclassed.

4. Political Debate (9) – $5.00
Jockey – James McDonald 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Well bred colt who hammered the line in the Champagne, before just getting his nose down in time to win The Phoenix last start. Has been set for this race and McDonald sticks with him. Definite winning chance.


5. Mishani Spartan (12) – $126
Jockey – Ben Thompson 57kg
Trainer – Les Ross

Didn’t do much first up in the Champagne before an improved effort last start behind Political Debate. Hard to see him winning this but probably not the worst.

6. Brosnan (7) – $18
Jockey – Brenton Avdulla 57kg
Trainer – Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou

Appreciated the drop back in grade last start to record a strong win at Flemington. Step up to a mile looks ideal, and he should enjoy a good run from the nice draw. One of the main hopes.

7. Green Shadows (19) – $31
Jockey – Nash Rawiller 57kg
Trainer – Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou

Got back and made good ground in the Sires last start. Step up to the mile looks favourable but he has to overcome the wide alley if he’s to win here.

8. Heroic Son (13) – $126
Jockey – Mark Du Plessis 57kg
Trainer – Peter & Will Hulbert

Whacked away ok in the Champagne before leading them up last start in The Phoenix and weakening late. Not sure the mile is what he’s looking for and he’s hard to have on those recent efforts.

9. Owen County (17) – $11
Jockey – Keagan Latham 57kg
Trainer – John Sargent

Interesting runner who was an impressive last start winner at Randwick. He should eat up the 1600m, but has to overcome the wide draw and is unraced on anything other than heavy ground. If all goes to plan he’s more than capable of winning.


10. Sharp ‘N’ Smart (5) – $4.00F
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 57kg
Trainer – Graeme & Deborah Rogerson

Super impressive win at Pukekohe before being sent across the Tasman to contest The Phoenix last start. His run there was very good and with one more bound wins the race. Ticks a lot of boxes here and the mile should be right up his alley.

11. Robusto (16) – SCRATCHED
Jockey – Jason Collett 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

12. Basquiat (1) – $15
Jockey – Tim Clark 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Just went under at Hawkesbury in a strong race before winning comfortably in midweek company at Doomben last start. Has had the benefit of a run over the mile and will get it soft from the inside gate. Keep safe.

13. Ringmaster (11) – $34
Jockey – Tommy Berry 57kg
Trainer – Michael Freedman

Wasn’t pretty but got the job done at the Sunshine Coast two back, before running on well in The Phoenix last start from the tail. Not 100% sure he gets a strong mile but isn’t without a hope on his last effort.

14. Fearless Knight (2) – $81
Jockey – Ryan Maloney 57kg
Trainer – Kacy Fogden

Didn’t handle the heavy ground at the Gold Coast before finishing close up behind Ringmaster last start. Looks tested here.

15. Lethal Thoughts (18) – $14
Jockey – John Allen 57kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Good win at Sale on debut before rolling to the front and holding on well behind Brosnan at Flemington. Obviously has good potential but hard to see him turning the tables on Brosnan, let alone a few others here.


16. Sheeza Belter (10) – $4.80
Jockey – William Pike 55kg
Trainer – Peter & Paul Snowden

Former Perth filly who was a brilliant winner of the Sires Produce last start. Step up in trip looks ideal and although this is tougher, she only has to repeat something similar to be winning again.

17. Tyresa (4) – $101
Jockey – Larry Cassidy 55kg
Trainer – Kelly Schweida

Went back from the outside gate last start in the Sires and made solid headway in the straight. Drawn much better here and looks one of the better outsiders of the field.

18. Amati (8) – SCRATCHED
Jockey – Craig Williams 55kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

19e. West Of Africa (3) – $61
Jockey – Sam Clipperton 57kg
Trainer – Annabel Neasham

Far from disgraced last start in The Phoenix behind Political Debate. Will enjoy a cosy run from the gate and shouldn’t be far away.

Final Word

After doing the form, it seems a case can be made for the majority of the field for this year’s G1 J J Atkins. There should be plenty of early speed and the race should set up nicely for those midfield and beyond.

With that said, I’m going to put the Kiwi on top, Sharp ‘N’ Smart. His run in The Phoenix last Saturday was very good, and he looks to be crying out for the mile now. Hall of fame trainer, Graeme Rogerson, has hinted during the week that the Cox Plate could be a target for this youngster, so he should be more than competitive here.


The horse that beat him home last Saturday, Political Debate, looks the logical danger. He only has to repeat that performance to be winning again, as does last start Sires Produce winner, Sheeza Belter.

The Ryan/Alexiou trained, Brosnan, can’t be left out of calculations after a dominant win at Flemington. His form prior was solid around some top class 2YO’s, and the John Sargent trained, Owen County, looks primed for this after a strong last start win, and should eat up the 1600m.
