2022 Golden Gift Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The Golden Gift is an 1100m set weights race, strictly for two year olds, held at Rosehill Racecourse. The $1m juvenile feature is another relatively new addition to the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival calendar and precedes the Magic Millions, which once upon a time, was the first major two year old race of the season. Last year’s Golden Gift was taken out by Sejardan.

Looking at the market, Dabble has Exceed And Excel filly, Summer Loving, favourite at $4.40 ahead of Barber ($5.50) and Coincide ($5.50). Bjorn Baker’s debutant, Disneck, is also well in contention at $6.50 off the back of a solid trial win.

If you’ve been in, or followed, the racing game for any period of time, you’ll understand that two year old races are tough betting assignments at the best of times. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Golden Gift along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Barber (16) – $5.50
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 56.5kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Followed up some decent barrier trial form with a good win on debut in the Kirkham Plate. He had a gun run in transit on that occasion and was good enough to take the gap at the furlong and put the race to bed. He faces a much tougher ask here from the outside gate but has race experience on his side and plenty of talent.

2. Coincide (13) – $5.50
Jockey – Tommy Berry 56.5kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Led them up, in typical Waterhouse/Bott fashion, on debut and was only run down late by Barber. Will more than likely adopt similar tactics here and should be improved by the run. Has to overcome a sticky gate but has the benefit of some race exposure and has to be respected.

3. Disneck (3) – $6.50
Jockey – Brock Ryan 56.5kg
Trainer – Bjorn Baker

Jumped well, sat behind the leader and was too strong late in a recent barrier trial at Randwick. Ran the fastest heat of the morning over the 740m which is a good sign and should enjoy a soft run from the good draw here. Looks hard to beat on debut.

4. Flying Trapeze (17) – $19
Jockey – Winona Costin 56.5kg
Trainer – Gary Portelli

Won a trial at Randwick before an ok debut in the Breeders Plate. Track was heavy on that occasion which may not have been suitable but he’s drawn the car park here and looks to have his work cut out yet again.

5. Gitalong (1) – $20
Jockey – Jay Ford 56.5kg
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes

Sat outside the leader on debut and whacked away ok to finish 3L from the winner. Inside gate looks a tick and he gets blinkers on to spark him up here, but still looks very new to the game and may be worth following next preparation.

6. Kintyre (15) – $61
Jockey – Jason Collett 56.5kg
Trainer – Gary Portelli

Run off his legs first up in the Kirkham Plate over 1000m. Will appreciate the slight step up in trip here and should be improved by race experience. Looks to have plenty of natural ability and can run a much improved race here if he jumps away clean and can stay in touch early.

7. Mexico (6) – $20
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy 56.5kg
Trainer – Michael Freedman

Trialled well at Randwick before being sent south to debut at Moonee Valley, where he ran a good second behind Arkansaw Kid in testing conditions. Looks very push button and gets the benefit of a good gate. Will be in it for a long way.

8. Misty Legend (7) – $13
Jockey – William Pike 56.5kg
Trainer – Richard & Will Freedman

Given two solid hit outs at the barrier trials leading into this, the latest a big win at Randwick. Looks to have plenty of early toe and has come up with an ideal barrier for his debut. In the mix.

9. Razors (12) – $15
Jockey – Sam Clipperton 56.5kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Did plenty wrong on debut and did a spectacular job to be beaten less than 3L. Gets a set of winkers applied for his second run here and should take plenty of benefit from that first hitout. The step up to 1100m suits and if he can land a spot midfield from the gate, he’ll be hard to beat.

10. Speedster (9) – $126
Jockey – Qin Yong (a) 56.5kg
Trainer – Ian Finn

Did little in a Randwick barrier trial before being beaten out of sight at Warwick Farm on debut. This is no easier and he looks outclassed.

11. Charm Stone (14) – SCRATCHED
Jockey – N/A 54.5kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

SCRATCHED

12. Infatuation (4) – $13
Jockey – Rachel King 54.5kg
Trainer – Bjorn Baker

Won a Gosford barrier trial before debuting at Randwick in the Kirkham Plate. He had no luck whatsoever in the straight on that occasion and did well to finish as close as he did. Should get a nice run from the good barrier here and shouldn’t be far away at the business end.

13. Line Of Law (11) – $21
Jockey – Dylan Gibbons (a) 54.5kg
Trainer – Bjorn Baker

Another filly from the Baker yard, this one on debut. Showed plenty of muster to sit outside the lead and win a recent Randwick barrier trial. She looks very new and has plenty of growing to do, and will need to use her early toe from the middle gate here if she’s to find a good spot. May be better suited in something easier for now.

14. Shine Your Light (2) – $15
Jockey – Reece Jones (a) 54.5kg
Trainer – Cassandra Stummer

Muswellbrook trained filly who ran a good race on debut in the Kirkham Plate. Her trial win prior to that was very good and she looks to have plenty of natural talent. Will land a good spot off the inside gate and can finish in the money again if the gaps appear at the right time.

15e. Summer Loving (8) – $4.40F
Jockey – Regan Bayliss 54.5kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Well bred filly who was dominant in a recent Rosehill barrier trial over 900m. She flew the gates there and put herself straight on the bunny, and showed a good turn of foot in the straight. Others have race experience which can play a big role in these races, but she’s from the right stable and will be fit and ready to go here. Can win.

16e. Maharba (5) – $18
Jockey – Tom Sherry 56.5kg
Trainer – David Payne

First starter who has looked good in two barrier trials here at Rosehill. He showed good early toe to lead both trials and ran a faster time than Summer Loving in the latest. Has the advantage of being trained on track and looks to be a natural, early running type, who can run a big race on debut from a good draw.

17e. Mojave Desert (10) – $31
Jockey – William Pike 56.5kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Closed off nicely in two recent barrier trials, the latest behind Maharba. Will get back and let the race unfold early and should be strong late. Might be a better horse in six months time but is capable of running ok here if he gains a start.

Final Word

A full field of well bred youngsters will greet the starter in this year’s $1m Golden Gift. A mix of raced stock and first starters are among the winning chances in what will make for a fascinating contest.

Going with one of Godolphins here, but not the one the market has honed in on. Thought Razors was brilliant on debut in the Kirkham Plate. He was slow into stride, saw plenty of backsides in the straight and still finished as strong as anything else to be beaten under three lengths. With natural improvement and a more economical run here, he can make amends and run a big race at good odds.

Was taken by the trial of Disneck from the Bjorn Baker yard. He sat outside the leader and let down well in the straight, running good time in comparison to the morning’s other heats. He should land a good spot from barrier three and take plenty of beating.

His stablemate, Infatuation, didn’t have a lot of clear air on debut. She did well to be beaten by only 2.6L in the Kirkham Plate on that occasion and looked good in a trial prior. Another who has drawn well and can improve second up here.

A couple at odds worth including are Kintyre and Shine Your Light. Both look to have plenty of natural ability and will be better suited up to 1100m here. No knock on Barber, Coincide or Summer Loving, but feel there is plenty of value around them.

2021 Golden Gift Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

Two places in the $5M Golden Slipper are on the line at Rosehill this Saturday, with the running of the 1100m Golden Gift. This race presents itself as a good opportunity for some two-year-olds to make their debut, while there are others that already have some race experience and are looking to build on their form. There are 12 juveniles facing the starter, with just three of the 12 yet to run an official race.

Looking at the market, Dabble has Shalatin as $4.20 favourite, marginally ahead of last-start winner, Sejardan ($5). Nobel ($7.50), Ojai ($9) and Queen Of The Ball ($9) are the other runners to be marked in single-figures, at the time of writing.

However, it isn’t just limited to those five! As a two-year-old race, it is extremely unpredictable and there are plenty of chances in the race, so we have dissected each of their chances for you! Read on below to find out runner by runner preview of the 2021 Golden Gift along with The Shark’s Golden Gift best tips.

1. Sejardan (12) – $5
Jockey – Jason Collett
Trainer – Gary Portelli

Sejardan was extremely impressive in the G3 Breeders’ Plate, beating his rivals by over a length. Gary Portelli is known for his ability to work wonders with two-year-olds, and that is clearly on show with this colt. He will be storming home strong and has the bonus of a race-win under his belt already, which only one other in this race can say.

2. Nobel (8) – $7.50
Jockey – Tommy Berry
Trainer – Annabel Neasham

Nobel was very well fancied in the Inglis Banner two weeks ago, being the second favourite in the lead up to the race despite being fourth emergency. He eventually got into the final field but finished 3 lengths back in third. He was purchased for $2.1M, so he is clearly well bred, and his trials in the lead up suggested he was worth the money, so maybe you can forgive him and blame the tight Moonee Valley track for his bad performance.

3. Contemporary (9) – $15
Jockey – Joshua Parr
Trainer – James Cummings

Being one of just two horses to have two runs under their belt, Contemporary has some advantages over the others. However, his last race saw him come up against five others in this race, and they all beat him home.

4. Shirvo (6) – $13
Jockey – James Innes Jnr
Trainer – Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou

Shirvo was one of those horses to beat Contemporary past the post, but he was still 1.5L off the winner, Ojai. He did make ground nicely in that race, but would need to reach a whole new level here.

5. Shalatin (5) – $4.20
Jockey – Jay Ford
Trainer – Joseph Pride

Shalatin slotted into 5th, between Shirvo and Contemporary, but actually had a really nice run. He jumped from the second widest barrier, raced three-wide and came from the back of the field to finish less than two lengths off the pace, overtaking Contemporary in the finish. His last 200m was outstanding there and it indicates he would eat up the extra 100m on offer here.

6. Cannonball (4) – $20
Jockey – Jan Van Overmeire
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Happy to leave Cannonball out. He ran 5th down the Flemington straight a few weeks back and the horse that came second on that day ran sixth in the Maribyrnong Plate last Saturday.

7. Mount Brilliant (10) – $18
Jockey – Tim Clark
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

The first of three debutants, Mount Brilliant comes from a clear leading stable of two- and three-year-old runners. However, his own camp has suggested that the wide draw will be tough for him to overcome and that he may not be as sharp as others in the race, especially those with a run under their belts already.

8. Ojai (3) – $9
Jockey – Jenny Duggan
Trainer – James Cummings

Ojai was an impressive first-start winner, beating home five rivals that she meets again in this race. She jumped well, settled nicely and then had an impressive burst home over the last 200m, indicating that the step up in distance should be no problem. She gets a nice soft draw to get her into the run, and it would be quite a story with Jenny Duggan getting the call up for Godolphin.

9. Queen Of The Ball (7) – $9
Jockey – Alysha Collett
Trainer – Richard & Michael Freedman

Queen Of The Ball was the filly that Ojai grabbed on the line in that run, leading throughout the race but unable to hold on. She was a bit wayward down the straight, not running in a straight line and it may have cost her. If she can behave better down the straight, she is every chance of holding on.

10. Snitcat (2) – $13
Jockey – Kathy O’Hara
Trainer – Gary Portelli

The second Gary Portelli runner, Snitcat, is lucky enough to have had two runs already. She ran behind Coolangatta, the Golden Slipper favourite, first up before finishing third behind Ojai and Queen Of The Ball last time out. She had every chance to catch the leading two in the straight but couldn’t quite get there and some of those behind her looked to be finishing better.

11. Ebhaar (11) – $16
Jockey – Robbie Dolan
Trainer – Peter & Paul Snowden

While she is yet to have a proper run, Ebhaar’s trial over 1045m was extremely impressive. She over raced at the start, was forced wide throughout and seemed to coast by her opponents to comfortably win the trial. The wide draw is sticky, but she has shown exceptional closing speed and looks to be a red-hot chance in this, if they choose to run her.

12. Birdonawing (1) – $34
Jockey – Brodie Loy
Trainer – Annabel Neasham

This Fastnet Rock filly is having her first start after a relatively decent trial, finishing second by just under a length. It is a big step up from a 735m trial to a 1100m G1 race, and she may just need the run here.

Final Word

While there has only been two runnings of the Golden Gift, we can see that it isn’t always a positive to be the pre-race favourite. In both 2019 and 2020, the favourite didn’t even place! If we are looking for more stats from the first two runnings of the race, we can see that fillies got the better of the boys in both years.

There are only five fillies in the race, with three of them completing the trifecta in the Kirkham Plate, the race that Dame Giselle came second in before winning this race in 2019. However, we are going with a different filly to come out on top, Ebhaar. Her trial over 1045m was extremely impressive, forced wide throughout before showing a nice turn of foot without Robbie Dolan having to put much work through her.

If she can repeat a similar sort of effort, with a bit more help from Dolan on race day, she should be storming home down the outside and be in with a massive chance. If you have a Rocket Boost available on Dabble, we’d recommend using it to get Ebhaar’s odds even bigger than what the other bookies are offering, and we are more than happy to take that here.

Best Golden Gift Tip: Ebhaar – Each-Way ($16/$4.40)
