2022 Coolmore Stud Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The $2m Coolmore Stud Stakes is a 1200m three year old race run down the straight at Flemington Racecourse. The set weights scamper has long been a grand final for three year old sprinters and has a lengthy honour roll that includes some absolute star gallopers and well renowned stallions.

Last year’s Coolmore was taken out by Home Affairs, who donned the Coolmore navy blue silks and just so happens to now stand at Coolmore Stud in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley.

Looking at the market, Dabble has Godolphin filly, In Secret, as the $3.80 favourite for this year’s feature sprint, off the back of her close up second in the Golden Rose. The horse that beat her on the occasion, Jacquinot, is a $5.50 chance, while Coolangatta ($7.50) and Buenos Noches ($8.00) are also given a chance in the market. Unbeaten colt, Grand Impact, has also been well supported and is into $9.00.

As the market suggests, this year’s Coolmore is one of the more keenly contested races this Spring. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Coolmore Stud Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Jacquinot (16) – $5.50
Jockey – Damian Lane 57kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Beat Aft Cabin in good style first up before an electrifying win in the Golden Rose. Attacked the line strong in The Everest last start to be only beaten 1.5L. Never raced up the Flemington straight but gives the impression it’ll suit, the outside gate is a plus and he has the right form. Watch for him late.

2. Best Of Bordeaux (17) – $17
Jockey – Ben Melham 57kg
Trainer – Kacy Fogden

Coolmore owned colt who is on the seven day back up after a gallant third in the Manikato last Saturday. Will race handy to the speed and has form around In Secret but might be found wanting the last little bit.

3. Sejardan (12) – $21
Jockey – John Allen 57kg
Trainer – Gary Portelli

Another on the quick turnaround after an eye-catching win last Saturday. Should be well suited by a genuine tempo here and if given clear air can unleash a sizzling turn of foot, as seen seven days ago. Not out of it.

4. Lofty Strike (5) – $23
Jockey – Jamie Mott 57kg
Trainer – Julius Sandhu

Returned from a spell with a good third behind Grand Impact at Caulfield. Showed plenty of promise winning both his starts in the Summer and should be improved by the first up run. In the mix.

5. Nettuno (10) – $23
Jockey – Damien Oliver 57kg
Trainer – Tony Gollan

Qld colt who hasn’t been far away in three runs over the border (NSW) this prep. Likely to find this a bit tougher but can’t be completely ruled out with D Oliver in the saddle.

6. Buenos Noches (15) – $8.00
Jockey – Craig Newitt 57kg
Trainer – Matthew Smith

Ran Giga Kick to a nostril last start in the Danehill here at Flemington. That form is good for any race and he goes super down the straight. Will get back and stalk from the high gate and have the last shot. Can win.

7. Grand Impact (1) – $9.00
Jockey – Mark Zahra 57kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Kept his unbeaten record intact when winning the Blue Sapphire last start at Caulfield. This is a different ball game now but winning form is good form and he looks to have his fair share of ability. Each-way chance.

8. Economics (14) – $13
Jockey – Chad Schofield 57kg
Trainer – Annabel Neasham

Resumed with a dominant win at Rosehill. The form out of the race has been good and although this is a big step up here, he can run time and will make his own luck on speed. Looked good in a recent Flemington jump out up the straight and is definitely worth including in exotics.

9. Meridius (6) – $51
Jockey – William Buick 57kg
Trainer – Lloyd Kennewell

Drops back to the 1200m here after an even effort in the Caulfield Guineas last start. He chased home Aft Cabin prior to that which ties in well but might find a few too sharp here.

10. Doull (4) – $61
Jockey – Jye McNeil 57kg
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Led them up last time out and was swallowed up late by Giga Kick and Buenos Noches. Gets the tongue tie on here and will roll forward but it’s hard to see him turn the tables on Buenos Noches alone in what looks a high pressure race.

11. Great Barrier Reef (7) – $126
Jockey – Damien Thornton 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Well supported last Saturday but failed to fire at the Valley. Run prior was good here behind Giga Kick and could improve at huge odds back on a dry surface.

12. Custodian (3) – $126
Jockey – Brett Prebble 57kg
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Speedy customer who led and almost stole it at Caulfield last start over 1400m. Will adopt similar tactics here but this race is a lot harder and would need to produce a career best figure to finish in the placings.

13. Bews (2) – $91
Jockey – Daniel Moor 57kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Got back and never came into it last start on a very heavy surface. Will appreciate a firmer deck here and gets blinkers on for the first time but may find this a bit beyond him.

14. Coolangatta (13) – $7.50
Jockey – Craig Williams 55kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Led from barrier to box last start and held out subsequent G1 winner, Bella Nipotina, in doing so. Steps up to a high pressure 1200m now and faces the Flemington straight for the first time, but is back to her own age and will be in it for a long way.

15. In Secret (9) – $3.80F
Jockey – James McDonald 55kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Game in defeat behind Jacquinot last start in the Golden Rose. Went to the line under a nice hold in a recent Flemington jump out down the straight and should get a nice trail from the middle gate here. Stable is flying and she looks ready to go for this.

16. Queen Of The Ball (8) – $34
Jockey – Joshua Parr 55kg
Trainer – Michael Freedman

Led and won well at Moonee Valley before a close up fifth behind Paulele last start. Has plenty of early toe and has jumped out well down the straight recently, but might be tested in the last 100m here.

17. C’est Magique (11) – $41
Jockey – Michael Dee 55kg
Trainer – Grahame Begg

Good run in the Cap D’antibes before a luckless sixth behind English Riviera last start. With a bit of luck could be unbeaten and comes from an astute yard. Capable of finishing in the money at big odds.

Final Word

It’s not unusual for a Coolmore Stud Stakes field to raise the hairs on an avid punter’s neck, and this year’s Coolmore is one of the better editions we’ve seen in recent times. It could even be argued that this is the race of the Spring. As expected it looks as though it’ll be a high pressure affair and tactics will be key, as they always are down the Flemington straight.

Feel the market has this race pretty spot on and I’ve got it down to three main winning hopes. Jacquinot the first, who was ultra-impressive winning the Golden Rose before another eye-catching run in The Everest last start. He looks well suited here and the wide draw is perfect. If he’s close enough at the clock tower, he’ll give this a mighty shake.

The Matthew Smith trained, Buenos Noches, ran Everest winner Giga Kick to a bee’s proverbial last start here at Flemington. Like Jacquinot, he will get back and stalk the field from the wide gate and have the last crack.

Favourite for the race, In Secret, also looks very hard to beat off the back of her narrow defeat in the Golden Rose. She looked good in a recent Flemington jump out and gets McDonald in the saddle.

Of the others, Economics will make his own luck in the first few and has smashed the clock at his last couple. He also had a Flemington jump out last Friday and looked very comfortable going through his gears to win nicely under jockey, Chad Schofield.

Sejardan was impressive last Saturday and will be strong late and as for last start Moir Stakes winner, Coolangatta, I’m willing to play around her up to 1200m in a high pressure race.

2021 Coolmore Stud Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

Godolphin trainer James Cummings has said that this year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes is one of the best ever and should have just as much relevance as the Golden Slipper, and we completely agree. This is an incredible field of three-year-old talent, with 16 colts and 1 filly lining up for the $1.5M sprint down the straight at Flemington Racecourse.

Sportsbet currently, as of Thursday afternoon, has Extreme Warrior marginally ahead of In The Congo, with the pair priced at $4.20 and $4.40 respectively. Extreme Warrior couldn’t have been better in his last start win in the Blue Sapphire, while In The Congo has had a five week break since his Golden Rose win! However, the talent doesn’t stop there as there are plenty of fast horses and group-level winners scattered throughout.

While those two have dominated the market, there are plenty of chances and we have analysed each and every runner for you! Read on below to find out runner by runner preview of the 2021 Coolmore Stud Stakes along with The Shark’s Coolmore Stud Stakes best tips.

1. Shaquero (2) – $51
Jockey – Luke Nolen
Trainer – Chris Waller

Shaquero has won two Group races to date but is yet to fire this campaign, going up against the older horses and finishing no better than 5th in two races. It isn’t the sort of form you want going into a race against the best sprinters of the age group.

2. Artorius (4) – $8.50
Jockey – Glen Boss
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Artorius drops down from 1600m after finishing third to Anamoe in the Caulfield Guineas. He did win the Blue Diamond over this trip at Caulfield, but will be spotting the leaders a fair distance, and they are hard to run down.

3. Ingratiating (8) – $23
Jockey – Daniel Moor
Trainer – James Cummings

After an impressive third in last Friday’s Manikato Stakes, Ingratiating is on the quick back-up here. The Godolphin camp are very pleased with how this colt is travelling right now and think he is back to his best, which would be good enough here. If you are happy to forgive his Danehill run, where he had excuses, then this price is definitely overs.

4. In The Congo (12) – $4.40
Jockey – Craig Williams
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Last start winner of the Golden Rose, In The Congo has had some incredible contests this prep. He has finished in the top two in all four of his runs and has been freshened specifically for this race, having a five week break since his win in the Golden Rose. He will be leading the way, will take some catching and while he is actually yet to win at 1200m, a 0.3L second to Anamoe is the worst result in those two races.

5. Home Affairs (13) – $11
Jockey – James McDonald
Trainer – Chris Waller

Where others are deep into their preparations, Home Affairs comes to the Coolmore Stud Stakes just third up. He was impressive when winning from the front first up, beating Paulele by 1.6L in the Heritage Stakes and then wasn’t disgraced in The Everest, finishing 5L back from Nature Strip after being up on the pace in a blisteringly run race. That form is definitely good enough to win this and, as mentioned, he should be peaking third up in his grand final.

6. Paulele (6) – $7
Jockey – Damien Oliver
Trainer – James Cummings

Paulele put the three-year-old sprinting crop on notice with an impressive 2.4L first up win in the Rosebud, but then just fell short of In The Congo in their rematch three weeks later. He then couldn’t catch Home Affairs in the Heritage Stakes and was sent for an easy kill in the Roman Consul, building back some winning confidence rather than contesting The Everest. His best is good enough, but he is now fifth up after a long, tough prep and may be feeling it.

7. Kallos (15) – $11
Jockey – Fred Kersley
Trainer – James Cummings

Kallos is the last of the three Godolphin runners but has certainly made a name for himself. Following on from a maiden win at Hawkesbury, Kallos came to Melbourne and beat a lot of this field down the Flemington straight in the 1100m Danehill. He raced up on speed and kicked away from the pack, winning by 2L, which is a very positive sign for his chances here.

8. Ranch Hand (16) – $35
Jockey – Brett Prebble
Trainer – Chris Waller

After beating Ingratiating in the Poseidon Stakes, Ranch Hand put his hat in the ring for this race but following a poor running in the Danehill, the market seems to have cooled off. There were others that finished off the Danehill better than him and the market reflects that here.

9. Extreme Warrior (9) – $4.20
Jockey – Jye McNeil
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr)

Well, what a win that was in the Blue Sapphire Stakes. After an impressive 4.2L win in a maiden at Echuca, not many expected Extreme Warriors to step up in grade and win again, this time finishing 3.8L ahead of Profiteer, who was then 3.2L ahead of Minsk Moment in third. His time there was only less than a second slower than Nature Strip’s win in The Everest, indicating that he has some serious jets.

10. Extreme Flight (3) – $27
Jockey – Damien Thornton
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Extreme Flight has won three straight races, which is an impressive feat for a three-year-old. However, his last two were at 1400m and he hasn’t really beaten much, at least nothing that would make him a factor here.

11. Sword Of State (7) – $46
Jockey – Luke Currie
Trainer – Jamie Richards

There was a lot of promise surrounding Sword Of State, who came across to Australia having won six of his seven career starts in New Zealand. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to compete in his two runs over here, carrying an absurd 60kg first up and then was unable to find another gear when going down by 4L to Paulele in the Roman Consul.

12. Bruckner (1) – $35
Jockey – John Allen
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Bruckner has only missed the place once from his five career starts and he was very impressive behind Kallos in the Danehill. However, he did have an easier run, with cover, and Kallos still managed to kick away in the final 100m.

13. Overpass (5) – $46
Jockey – Craig Newitt
Trainer – Bjorn Baker

While Overpass has three career wins, his best career performances are finishing 1.9L back from Paulele in the Roman Consul last start and finishing 3.1L back from Tiger Of Malay in the 1400m Sires Produce last prep. The fact he ran a relatively strong 1400m race last prep is a positive, but how can he make up the two lengths on Paulele now?

14. Marine One (11) – $35
Jockey – Dean Yendall
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Marino One has won both starts since changing over to the Maher & Eustace camp, however he has run at 1000m in both of those and hasn’t beaten much. It is hard to use his form from last prep, since he has changed camps, but he was 2L off General Beau on two separate occasions, who was then 2L off Kallos in the Danehill.
Sportsbet Derby Day Promo

15. Minsk Moment (17) – $61
Jockey – Michael Dee
Trainer – Chris Waller

The fourth Waller-trained colt is another to come out of the Blue Sapphire, where he finished 7L back from Extreme Warriors. It is hard to see how he is any chance of competing here based on that effort.

16. Battleton (10) – $81
Jockey – Rachel King
Trainer – Bjorn Baker

Battleton is on the quick backup after finishing second in last week’s Brian Crowley Stakes, beating short-priced favourite Able WIllie home but still a length off Mazu. Considering Mazu was more than a couple of lengths off In The Congo and Paulele a few runs back, Battleton can’t be considered.

17. Gimmie Par (14) – $41
Jockey – Blaike McDougall
Trainer – Peter Moody

The only filly in the race running for one of the hottest trainers in the game, Peter Moody’s Gimmie Par shouldn’t be an afterthought, considering she ran second to Ingratiating last prep and won first up before a valiant fourth in the Danehill. She does get a 1.5kg weight swing on Kallos from that race but meets Bruckner at the same weight differential and he had a length on her in that one.

Final Word

This really is a cracking edition of the Coolmore Stud Stakes, with plenty of live chances. Extreme Warrior and In The Congo have dominated the market so far, both coming off impressive last start victories. If you want to find these two, the data suggests that you can, given four of the last 11 favourites have come out on top.

In saying that, three of the last 11 Coolmore Stud Stakes have been won by horses priced with double-figure odds, and we have found one that fits that category. NSW-trained horses have won 8 of the last 13 editions of the race, and there is a horse that has beaten some of his rivals first up, contested the best sprint race in the world second up and comes here ready to fire in his Grand Finals.

Chris Waller rarely has a back weekend, let alone two in a row, so we expect him to have Home Affairs fit and firing for the Coolmore Stud Stakes. James McDonald jumps on board, which is always a positive, and while his main competitors seem to be deep in their prep, Home Affairs is just third up, indicating he should be ready to peak. Given Sportsbet will be offering a bonus back to fifth, we will definitely take the extra security since it is a massive and talented 17-horse field! However, given how much we rate this colt, we like our chances that we will come out with a big-odds winner, or a bonus bet as a worst case scenario.

2020 Coolmore Stud Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

It’s a wide-open edition of the stallion making Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), with a few talented fillies holding prominent positions in the market and looking to upset the party.

Let’s take a look at each and every runner lining up in the $1.5 million contest…

1 – Farnan – $6 ???

Possibly the biggest key to the race, with multiple question marks surrounding the Golden Slipper winner. Has he improved from his two-year-old season? Is he back from his Run To The Rose failure and his mystery illness? He looked like the best colt in Australia heading into the preparation and at his best can win, but who knows? Goes in everything and is a chance.

2 – Wild Ruler – $6.50 ???

Has been in outstanding form this preparation and is looking to complete a hattrick of wins. The only knock is he hasn’t come up against the absolute A Graders, but has taken care of Doubtland. Is another big chance and must be included.

3 – Mamaragan – $126

Hasn’t looked like the same horse from his very strong juvenile campaign, with the price telling the story.

4 – Glenfiddich – $16 ?

Looked one of the better picks for the Caulfield Guineas before his preparation was interrupted, and now finds himself back to the 1200m in what has to be an afterthought. It’d be some training effort by Moody if he won this, left field chance.

5 – Ranting – $17 ???

Got his head in front down the straight in the Danehill then had a look around and was too green to win, but proved his ability winning the three-horse Blue Sapphire last start. Massive chance and a big price.

6 – Doubtland – $19 ??

If we were getting wet ground his price would just about be halved, class galloper who took care of Ranting down the straight earlier in the preparation. Has to be a chance even with the expected Good 4, and is a must for exotics.

7 – Anders – $10 ?

He looked a star of the spring when he made a mess of them in the San Domenico Stakes, and then was turned over at a short price in the Blue Sapphire Stakes after an interrupted few weeks. At his best can win, but have a few ahead of him due to the stop start preparation.

8 – Holyfield – $41

Think he’s running into quite a few that will just be too smart for him on the day.

9 – Extra Time – $101

Winning a BM75 at Morphettville and then winning a Coolmore the next start would be some effort. Not here.

10 – Our Playboy – $51

Won the Vain Stakes against a few of these earlier in the prep, and has been unsighted since his disappointing run in the McNeil Stakes. Running into a few too many in-form, and probably more talented.

11 – Flying Award – $26 ?

Was the favourite in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude before having an abnormal respiratory noise and falling out of the race. Is a talented colt, Oliver retains the ride, and could be a knockout chance at odds, certainly worth including in exotics.

12 – Swats That – $9

The first of the fillies, she beat Muntaseera last outing and has been running well against her own sex. This is a massive step up, and at the skinny quote, I’m happy to be against her.

13 – Muntaseera – $27  ??

Was close in the market behind Swats That last start, and we’re getting a massive price this time around that looks overs to me. Goes in exotics and could surprise.

14 – September Run – $4.20 ??

The favourite in a very open edition of the Coolmore Stud Stakes. Has had two looks down the Flemington straight for two wins, and can’t knock what she’s done. Is obviously a massive chance, but up against the boys, think it’s best to back a few roughies rather than backing the truck up and just backing her.

Tip: 2-5-1-13

? = Must Watch
? = Big Winning Chance
?= Worth Including in Exotics
