2023 Australian Guineas Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

One of the premier three-year-old races on the Australian racing calendar, the Group 1 Australian Guineas, will be run and won this Saturday at Flemington Racecourse.

Last start CF Orr Stakes winner, Jacquinot, headlines the $1m mile feature and will be out to make it three wins in a row, and take home his third Group 1 title at just start number eleven.

He (Jacquinot) is currently the $2.25 favourite with Dabble, ahead of first up winner, Elliptical, at $6.50. Attrition is on the third line of betting at $8.00 and kiwi colt, Legarto, is not without a hope at $10.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen, especially in capacity fields. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2023 Australian Guineas along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Jacquinot (11) – $2.25F
Jockey – Damian Lane 57kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Did it the hard way first up at Sandown in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes before winning the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes in the stewards room last time out. Steps up to the mile now which suits and drops back to his own age group. Thrown in at the weights and clearly looks the one to beat.

2. Elliptical (2) – $6.50
Jockey – Blake Shinn 57kg
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Resumed from a break with a strong win in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes here at Flemington. Was narrowly beaten at Group 1 level at his only go at a mile and drawn to get a soft run from the gate. Looks to be one of the main dangers to the favourite.

3. Osipenko (13) – SCRATCHED
Jockey – Luke Nolen 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

N/A

4. Mr Maestro (15) – $21
Jockey – Ben Melham 57kg
Trainer – Andrew Forsman

On the quick back-up here after a solid second to Pericles last Saturday in the Group2 Autumn Classic. Drops back to the mile now which is a bit of an odd move and has come up with a horror draw, but has a stack of ability and loves Flemington. Place chance.

5. Virtuous Circle (10) – $61
Jockey – Blaike McDougall 57kg
Trainer – Liam Howley

Stepped away slowly and never got into the race first up at Sandown behind Glint Of Silver. Step up in trip here is a positive but this is no easy task second up. Others look to have him covered.

6. The Fortune Teller (6) – $31
Jockey – John Allen 57kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Had a good run first up in the Autumn Stakes and kept trying all the way to the line. Will strip fitter for that performance and gets a couple of key gear changes here. Can run into the placings again from the good gate and with the step up to a mile.

7. Bank Maur (17) – $31
Jockey – Jye McNeil 57kg
Trainer – Richard Laming

Outbobbed first up by Jacquinot, when beating home subsequent Group 1 runner-up, Ruthless Dame, before an even effort in the CS Hayes last start. Won’t find this any easier and the gate is what nightmares are made of. Will need plenty of luck if he’s to turn the tables on Jacquinot and a few others here.

8. Amenable (1) – $13
Jockey – Damien Oliver 57kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Went super first up in the Autumn Stakes, in what was a race dominated by those on speed. He ran the fastest last 400m of the day on that occasion and the form out of the race has since been franked by Pericles. Will need some luck from the inside draw but can win off his first up effort.

9. Elkington Road (4) – $26
Jockey – Jamie Mott 57kg
Trainer – Michael Moroney

Wasn’t beaten far in a bunched finish first up in the CS Hayes Stakes. Was beaten under two lengths in the Caulfield Guineas last Spring. Should get a lovely run from the draw here and the mile suits. Not the worst.

10. Lindermann (14) – $26
Jockey – Luke Nolen 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

*This horse has since been scratched.*

Ran ok first up in BM78 grade at Randwick before being let stride last time out and winning in good time. Pretty certain the instructions will be to let him roll again from the wide gate here but the opposition is tougher and the Flemington straight can be very long at the best of times. Others make more appeal.

11. Muramasa (16) – $51
Jockey – Daniel Moor 57kg
Trainer – Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young

Resumed after a Derby prep with a solid effort in the CS Hayes Stakes, where he was beaten under three lengths. Will be ridden back again here from the wide gate and despite the step up in trip being a positive, he may well be looking for a bit further. Nice horse, but not here.

12. Maximillius (3) – $26
Jockey – Ethan Brown 57kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Had a good run behind the speed first up in the CS Hayes and battled away well all the way to the line. Was beaten just 2L by Jacquinot the run prior. Will most likely get a similar run in transit form the good gate again but is untried past seven furlongs. If he can run a strong mile he’s in with a hope at big odds.

13. Holymanz (5) – $19
Jockey – Mark Zahra 57kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Hit the front at the furlong last start only to be run down late by Elliptical. Maps to get another good run behind the speed here with Zahra back in the saddle. Wasn’t beaten far his only go at a mile last prep and can finish in the money again.

14. Attrition (7) – $8.00
Jockey – Jamie Kah 57kg
Trainer – Mitchell Freedman

Got back and motored home in the CS Hayes last start, despite having little luck in the home straight. Looks as though he will eat up the 1600m and is drawn well with Kah on. Looks one of the better chances.

15. Legarto (9) – $10
Jockey – Michael Dee 55kg
Trainer – Ken & Bev Kelso

Matamata trained filly who won her first five starts in a row, including the Group 1 1000 Guineas at Riccarton. Tasted defeat for the first time last start in the Listed Karaka Million behind Prowess, but had little luck and was far from disgraced. Two time winner at a mile and Michael Dee is riding well. Very wary.

16. Laced Up Heels (12) – $61
Jockey – Chris Parnham 55kg
Trainer – Luke Fernie

On the seven day back up after finishing fourth to Shuffle Dancer last Saturday. Was placed at Group 3 level her only go at 1600m in Perth and boasts a victory over the very smart Amelia’s Jewel. Hard to have her on top but could represent some value for exotic players.

17e. Japanese Emperor (8) – $126
Jockey – Daniel Stackhouse 57kg
Trainer – Michael Moroney

Second of the Moroney trained runners who ran ok first up in the Autumn Stakes. Will strip fitter for that run but has to turn the tables on a few of his rivals here, let alone beat the favourite. Not keen.

Final Word

Plenty of class to step out here in the Group 1 Australian Guineas but feel Jacquinot has a bit on them at the weights. He beat the older horses at WFA last time out in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes and should only improve out to 1600m. He’ll need some luck from the gate, but Damian Lane knows him well and he looks the one to beat.

The Mitch Freedman trained, Attrition, was luckless last time out in the Group 2 CS Hayes Stakes, a race that many of these come through. The step up to a mile looks favourable and he’s drawn to get a cosy run. Not sure if he starts here or Sydney, but is worth including whichever way they decide to go.

Amenable was super first up in the other form reference, the Autumn Stakes. He ran the fastest last 400m of the meeting that day and is another suited by the rise in trip. He’ll need a bit of luck from the inside draw but looks one of the key hopes.

Big watch on the trans-Tasman galloper, Legarto. He won his first five, including the Group 1 1000 Guineas at a mile and there’s not many jockeys riding better than Michael Dee.

2022 Australian Guineas Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The Australian Guineas is a $1m Group 1 contest, held over 1600m at Flemington for 3YOs. The set weights feature is one of the major 3YO races on the Australian racing calendar, as is the Randwick Guineas, run on the same day at Royal Randwick.

First run in 1987, the relatively new race to the calendar boasts a very respectable honour roll. Sire of sires, Zabeel, won the race in 1990, Champion 3YO Mahognay saluted in 1994, and in more recent years, Arrowfield’s star filly, Miss Finland, was victorious under jockey Craig Williams in 2007.

This year’s Australian Guineas has brought together a full size field, and a good one at that. Interestingly enough, there are no fillies contesting this year’s feature. Looking at the market, Dabble has G1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Profondo, favourite at $4.40, ahead of G1 Victorian Derby winner Hitotsu, at $5.00. Team Snowden trained Captivant is next best at $6.50, and up and coming 3YO Pinstriped rounds out those under double figures at $8.50.

We know with horse racing that anything can happen and this year’s Australian Guineas looks very open. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Australian Guineas along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Hitotsu (2) – $5.00
Jockey – John Allen 57kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Rounded out last prep with a super win in the G1 Victoria Derby, at Flemington over 2500m. Ran well in the Caulfield Guineas prior to that, and has trialled well leading up to this. Draws an inside gate which is probably not advantageous, but if Allen can extricate to the outside or pick a way through the field without getting into too much trouble, he’s more than capable of winning this first up.

2. Captivant (10) – $6.50
Jockey – Jamie Kah 57kg
Trainer – Peter & Paul Snowden

Both runs back this prep have been good, the latest a good 3rd to Pinstriped in the G3 CS Hayes Stakes. Finished 2nd in last year’s Caulfield Guineas over a mile, before contesting the Cox Plate. The set weights conditions bring him into calculations here, and looks one of the main hopes.

3. Profondo (15) – $4.40F
Jockey – Robbie Dolan 57kg
Trainer – Richard Litt

$1.9m yearling, who has certainly lived up to the hype in his short career. Arguably should be unbeaten, after he raced green and was just defeated in last year’s G3 Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill. He then went on to win the G1 Spring Champion Stakes with a leg in the air. He’s had the benefit of two trials leading into this, and although will have bigger fish to fry later in his prep, cannot be overlooked here. Deserves favouritism.

4. Forgot You (6) – $10
Jockey – Mark Zahra 57kg
Trainer – Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young

Scratched from Randwick Guineas to run here. Talented colt who was an eye catcher first up behind Pinstriped. He got back, as he often does, and hammered the line there running some very good late splits. His run in last year’s Caulfield Guineas was very good over the mile and he draws a perfect gate here. Looks on target for another good prep and can get the job done here going off his first up run.

5. Alegron (3) – $71
Jockey – Damien Oliver 57kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Victoria Derby runner up who resumed in the CS Hayes Stakes at Flemington. He got back and made some good late ground on that occasion. His form last prep wasn’t far behind the likes of Profondo and Hitotsu, and the step up to 1600m looks ideal. Drawn well to position a bit closer in the run and has to be included in multiples.

6. Coastwatch (18) – $16 – Scratched
Jockey – Craig Williams 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Hasn’t been seen since winning the G2 Autumn Stakes at Caulfield three weeks ago. He rode the speed on that occasion and was able to hold off the late challengers. Faces a horror draw here (18) and needs some early luck to be in the finish.

*Also accepted in the Randwick Guineas.

7. Lightsaber (4) – $14
Jockey – Luke Nolen 57kg
Trainer – Peter G Moody

Was scratched at the barriers a fortnight ago in the CS Hayes Stakes. Prior to that missed the kick badly in the CF Orr. Wasn’t far away in last year’s Caulfield Guineas over the mile, and has won here at Flemington. The barrier blanket goes on here, and he needs to behave himself pre race and conserve as much energy as possible in order to be winning this.

8. Ranch Hand (9) – $17
Jockey – Craig Williams 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Was terrific on resumption in the G3 Eskimo Prince Stakes at Randwick over 1200m. He then raced well again in the G2 Hobartville Stakes behind Anamoe. Has never been tried over a mile, but his runs this prep suggest it may be what the doctor ordered. Each way chance.

*Also accepted in the Randwick Guineas.

9. Pinstriped (11) – $8.50
Jockey – Michael Dee 57kg
Trainer – Enver Jusufovic

Unbeaten gelding who seems to improve every time he goes to the races. Was very good last start winning the G3 CS Hayes Stakes at this track. Steps up to the mile now which looks no issue. This is no doubt his biggest test to date, but there’s no reason he can’t make it 4 from 4.

10. Rhinoceros (5) – $91
Jockey – Jamie Mott 57kg
Trainer – Emma-Lee & David Browne

Kiwi colt who is a 3 time winner in Australia. Gets out to his pet trip here, after finishing down the track in the CS Hayes behind Pinstriped. Will need to improve on his latest effort, but draws well and gets the services of underrated hoop Jamie Mott.

11. Spirit of Gaylard (8) – $41
Jockey – Jordan Childs 57kg
Trainer – Mitchell Freedman

Resumed in the G2 Autumn Stakes, with a pass mark behind Coastwatch. Steps up to the mile now which helps, and is a winner here at Flemington. Ticks a few boxes and will be strong late. Could show up in the placings at big odds.

12. Sharp Response (12) – $41
Jockey – Beau Mertens 57kg
Trainer – Julius Sandhu

Honest gelding who wasn’t far away in the G2 Autumn Stakes last start. First go at 1600m here and draws a sticky alley in doing so. Happy to go around him, but he’s not the worst.

13. Prix De Turn (16) – $51
Jockey – Ben Allen 57kg
Trainer – Matthew Brown

Was sent back to maiden grade last start, after contesting the likes of the Caulfield Guineas last prep, and absolutely destroyed his rivals. Has shown he has the ability to be competitive in this grade, but has drawn poorly in barrier 16 which makes it tough.

14. Zerelle (17) – $81
Jockey – Craig Newitt 57kg
Trainer – Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young

Winner of both starts this prep, albeit in benchmark grade. Was outclassed in last year’s Caulfield Guineas, and the wide gate (17) all but seals his fate here.

15. Pascero (7) – $17
Jockey – Damian Lane 57kg
Trainer – Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young

Winner of 2 from 3. Almost stole it in the CS Hayes last start, when he put a big gap on his rivals around the home turn, but was run down late by Pinstriped. Draws well enough to get a soft run, but the step up to a mile has to be a question considering he has been a touch weak in his last two starts over 7 furlongs.

16. Bon’s A Pearla (13) – $61
Jockey – Brett Prebble 55kg
Trainer – Kevin Corstens

On the 7 day back up here after finishing an unlucky midfield in the G2 Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday. Has had one go at the mile, where he finished down the track behind Yearning in last year’s G1 1000 Guineas. Draws an awkward gate and hard to see him winning this.

17e. Maurice’s Medad (14) – $34
Jockey – Joshua Parr 57kg
Trainer – Bjorn Baker

Sydney visitor who looks to have avoided the Randwick Guineas, in a bid to find a dryer surface. His first up run in the G3 Eskimo Prince Stakes was very good, where he made good late ground. He was again strong last start in the G2 Hobartville behind Anamoe, where he finished 5th. Two stone lighter this prep, and it looks to have done him the world of good. The mile suits now, and he could be over the odds here.

18e. Corona Lad (1) – $91
Jockey – Thomas Stockdale (a) 57kg
Trainer – Nathan Dunn

Won both starts at his first prep, before resuming in the CS Hayes a fortnight ago. He wasn’t disgraced on that occasion, but this looks no easier. Look for him in something easier.

Final Word

Well, what a race we have on our hands here. We are blessed this year with a crop of very exciting 3YOs, and that is well and truly shown off here. G1 winners Profondo and Hitotsu head the market, after breathtaking wins in the Spring Champion Stakes and Victoria Derby last prep. Both colts resume here and are looking to kick off their campaigns in fine style.

Forgot You has been scratched from the Randwick Guineas to run here, and looks hard to beat going off his first up effort and the step up in trip. Waller pair, Coastwatch and Ranch Hand, remain dually accepted in both this and the Randwick Guineas, and it will be interesting to see where they start, providing Sydney’s heavy track. Both are capable of playing a major role in this race.

Captivant is looking to go one better here, after finishing 2nd in last year’s Caulfield Guineas, and his runs this prep suggest he is more than capable, and exciting gelding Pinstriped is out to make it 4 from 4, which looks well within his capabilities after what we’ve seen him produce thus far.

With that said and done, I’m glad Forgot You has been withdrawn from the Randwick Guineas, as I think he’s the one to beat here. His first up run in the CS Hayes was brilliant, when he made up many lengths late in the race. Zahra sticks, he’s drawn well and with the benefit of that run under his belt, I’m hoping he can knock off the fancied runners who resume here first up, namely Profondo and Hitotsu.

2021 Australian Guineas Runner By Runner Analysis, Odds & Tips

Last year’s Australian Guineas was all about the showdown between Catalyst and Alligator Blood in a small field, whereas this year we’ve got a capacity field of 16 plus an emergency all ready to lock horns for the $1 million up for grabs.

Let’s take a look at each and every runner in the 2021 Australian Guineas to find the winner and some value…

1 – Ole Kirk – $8.00

Obviously a classy horse who has beaten many of these in the Caulfield Guineas, but may not have come back the same galloper in the autumn. His first up run in Sydney was good enough over the 1400m, but his run in the Futurity Stakes was worrying last outing. He was in the bad part of the track on the rail and it’s no shame to struggle at WFA level, but his last 200m was worrying after looming in the straight. Can’t have them all, and happy to be against him here.

2 – Tagaloa – $3.90 👀🏆💰

Outstanding return to form in the CS Hayes Stakes last start where he went out at a huge tempo and was able to back it up with equally impressive closing splits in a performance of the very top shelf.

Had the favours with the barrier last start but should be able to cross and get a nice suck run behind some pacemakers here, and will be right in this again and the one to beat with a similar performance

3 – Aysar – $8.00 👀🏆💰

Doing his best Tom Melbourne impression with four 2nd places in a row. Beat home Tagaloa first up in the Manfred and went down to him last start in the CS Hayes. Tagaloa had the map advantage there and this time Aysar has the better gate, and a far better price about him. There are angles there if you like the horse and think he can turn the tables on the favourite.

4 – Cherry Tortoni – $13 👀🏆💰

Was the run of the race back in the field in the CS Hayes, and will relish the step up to the mile and the return to Flemington where he has had success previously. Has drawn the carpark in 17 and will be spotting the talented on-pacers a massive headstart. Can win this but will need everything to fall his way, goes in everything.

5 – Dom To Shoot – $14 💰

Another coming out of the CS Hayes who performed well, and ran home strongly similarly to Cherry Tortoni. Can throw in exotics at the price.

6 – Lunar Fox – $151

Price tells the tale. Not here.

7 – Grandslam – $61 💰

Placed in the Caulfield Guineas at similar prices to this and will give them something to chase. Could stick on again to run a hole and can be thrown in wider exotics.

8 – Poland – $13 💰

Won the Autumn Stakes at double figures and gets the step up to the mile and Craig Williams on, both ticks. There are a few things going his way, but it’s tough to see him beating some of the stars here. Each way chance.

9 – Beltoro – $61

This looks a pretty optimistic goal. Not here.

10 – Embolism – $61

Talented horse from a great trainer and has D Oliver on, but it’s very tough to back him off his last start

11 – It’sourtime – $35 💰

Another one from the D O’Brien camp, bit of a strange preparation going from the 1400m, down to 1200, and jumping up to the mile. Could run a hole.

12 – Jet Propulsion – $31

Will improve second up and had form around Mo’unga and Peltzer last preparation. Price is about right.

13 – Cambourne – $21

Well supported in the CS Hayes being backed into $6, but never kicked on and finished midfield. Would need to improve significantly.

14 – Ironedge – $101 💰

Won well at Ballarat and looks overs at $101, can be thrown in wider exotics and stranger things have happened.

15 – Here To Shock – $34

Spent his tickets too early to lead in the CS Hayes and from all reports didn’t parade well that day. Looks hard to have.

16 – Zou Dancer – $6.50 💰

It was a visually impressive win in The Vanity last start and she’s a very smart filly with the best jockey in the country onboard in Jamie Kah. However, she beat a bunch of staying type fillies over 1400m, and now she’s thrown in the deep end against the boys. Happy to be against her but she’ll be in this for a long way.

17e – Lofty Star – $201

Unlikely to get a run and will be nowhere near it if he does.

Tip: 2-3-4-5
